Study Guide – Subjects & Predicates
All sentences have two parts. The subject tells who or what the sentence is about. The
predicate tells something about the subject.

Verbs show action or being in the predicate. They are also called the simple predicate.
Action verbs show something can be done.
Example: The student shared the good news about Christ.
Compound verbs are made up of two or more verbs. The verbs are usually connected by
the word and.
Example: The students laughed and played at recess.
State of being verbs do not show action, but do say something about the subject.
Memorize: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been ( these are always verbs )
Helping verbs – state of being verbs can also be helping verbs
Memorize: have, had, has, do, does, did, shall, will, should, would, may, might, must,
can, could
Verb phrase is the main verb and its helping verbs. The main verb will be the last verb in the phrase.
a state of being verb, Example: Our school has been the winner for two years.
action verb. Example: The student will ask politely for permission.
