Study Guide – Nouns & Pronouns

Singular nouns name one person, place, or thing.

Plural nouns name more than one person, place, or thing.

Making Plurals

  1. most nouns, add s
  2. nouns ending in s, x, ch, or sh, add es
  3. nouns ending in y preceded by a consonant, change y to i and add es
  4. nouns ending in y preceded by a vowel, add s
  5. most nouns ending in f, add s
  6. some nouns ending in f or fe, change the f or fe to v and add es

  7. nouns ending in o preceded by a consonant, add es
  8. nouns ending in o preceded by a vowel, add s
  9. musical words ending in o, add s

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.

Example: Mr. Smith wanted to take his son fishing.

An antecedent is the noun for which the pronoun stands.

Example: Mr. Smith wanted to take his son fishing.

Be careful not to confuse contractions with pronouns.

Example: It’s = it is, they’re = they are, you’re = you are

 

 

 

Diagramming sentences

In an imperative sentence, the subject is always you.

Example: Obey your parents.

Example: The boys and girls will pray.
