Study Guide – Chapter 8: Oceanography

Continental Slope – has deep trenches

Ocean floor

1. at the bottom of the ocean

2, contains long mountain ranges called oceanic ridges

3. contains underwater volcanoes

Continental Shelf

  1. contains plant life
  2. along the edges of the continents
  3. made primarily of mud and sand deposited by rivers as they empty into the ocean
  4. shallow water
  5. contains rich oil fields
  6. contains the most fish

Octopus

  1. has the largest brain of sea animals

2. thought to be the most intelligent invertebrate

Blue whale – the largest animal that has ever lived

Salmon – unique fish that always leaves the ocean and returns to the stream

where it was born to lay its own eggs

Cod – caught for its meat and the oil of its liver

Sperm whale – once hunted for its oil and ambergris (a waxy substance)

Gills – allow fish to get oxygen from the water

Whale shark – the largest fish

White shark – a man eater

Grenadiers and viper fish

1. live near the ocean floor

2. look strange because of their huge mouths and sharp teeth

Manta ray – fish with huge winglike fins which allow it to appear to fly through the water

Ocean currents

  1. moved primarily by wind
  2. knowledge of ocean currents made sea travel quicker
  3. Matthew Maury used messages in bottles to help perform experiments which led to many
  4. important discoveries

  5. carry warm or cool water
  6. the Humboldt current sweeps up from the South Pole along the western coast of South

America and provides cool water
