2007-2008

We had a great time celebrating Watermelon Week in October.  We sang watermelon songs, wrote watermelon poems, weighed, measured, counted, sorted and ate watermelon.  We read the book, “Down By The Bay by Raffi and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott.  We sang the song all week and added more verses everyday.

Down By the Bay

Down by the bay, where the watermelons grow,

Back to my home I dare not go,

For if I do my mother will say,

“Did you ever see a goose kissing a moose,

Down by the bay.”

(Additional verses)

2.      Did you ever see a whale with a polka-dot tail….

3.      Did you ever see a fly wearing a tie….

4.      Did you ever see a bear combing his hair….

5.      Did you ever see llamas eating their pajamas….

6.      Did you ever have a time when you couldn’t make a rhyme…..

Down by the bay.

Seed Spitting Contest

We cut the watermelon up and everyone had a delicious slice. We each saved 3 seeds from the watermelon and practiced filling our mouth with air and blowing hard.   We marked on the floor with masking tape up to 18 feet.  It was fun for the children to round up to the next number when the seed was half way between 2 numbers. We went in alphabetical first name order and spit our seeds to see whose would go further.  We took our colored pencils and graphed on paper the distance each child spit his/her seed.

Caleb was our champion watermelon spitter.

He spit his watermelon seed 12 feet.

 Way to go!!!!!!!!

We sang this fun song.

Watermelon, Watermelon

(tune: “Are You Sleeping?”)

Watermelon, watermelon,

On the vine, one the vine,

Red and ripe and juicy,

Red and ripe and juicy,

Please be mine,

Please be mine.

Art Projects

We made watermelons out of red and green construction paper and hot glued on watermelon seeds.  We also made watermelons out of red, green, and white art foam and had a beautiful verse that went along with the colors of the watermelon and how they pertain to Christ.  Below is the verse and the scriptures.
