September Poetry Page

Our poetry units go along with our September units on Welcome Back To School,  Colors, Apples, and Ocean Life.

I Can Read Colors

Orange is an orange

Yellow is the sun.

Brown is the bear and

Purple is the plum.

Red is an apple.

Green is a tree.

Black is a man’s hat.

I can read!

Listen to me.

Welcome to Our Classroom

(Tune: Sing a Song of Sixpence)

Welcome to our classroom,

Come in and sit right down.

We are all together,

Take a look around.

Here inside our classroom

There’s lots to see and do.

I am happy being here

And making friends with you!

First Grade, First Day

First grade, first day, I wonder if I'll get to play.

First grade, first day, I'm not sure I want to stay.

First grade, first day, my teacher seems to be okay!

First grade, first day, I hope I learn to read today!

The Summer’s Over

(Tune:  You Are My Sunshine)

The summer’s over-no more vacation,

But I have had a lot of fun!

And I am happy, and I’m excited

‘Cause now the school year has begun!

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

(Jump rope activity)

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear turn around.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear touch the ground.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear turn off the light.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear say good night.

We Are Going To Tidy Up

(Tune:  Mary Had a Little Lamb)

We are going to tidy up,

Tidy up, tidy up.

We are going to tidy up,

To keep our class room clean.

We all put our things away,

Our things away, our things away.

We all put our things away,

And now our classroom’s clean.

Way Up High in the Apple Tree

Way up high in the apple tree

Two little apples smiled at me.

I shook that tree as hard as I could.

Down came the apples.

Mmmm, were they good.

Apple, Apple Way Up High

Apple, apple way up high,

I can reach you if I try.

Climb a ladder,

Hold on tight.

Pick you quickly,

Take a bite!

Scissors

Scissors cut paper. Scissors cut hair.

Scissors cut things that are too hard to tear.

Scissors cut ribbons. Scissors cut string.

I like to use scissors for all kinds of things.

Good Morning
Good morning! Good morning!
Good morning! Good morning!
Isn't it fun!
Pencils and crayons
Erasers and paper
Reading books, too.
Good morning! Good morning!
School has begun.

My First Day
See me skip
See me run
I'm going to school like everyone.

See me jump
See me grin
When the bell rings, I walk in.

See me jump
See me play
I'm in First Grade! Hip hip hooray!

We Are Ready

1-2-3-4
Line up nicely at the door
5-6-7-8
We are quiet and we look great
Don't forget 9 and 10
We are ready - that's the end

1-2-3-5-6-7-8-9-10

September

September means-
School,
Effort, and
Play.
Trying your best
Each hour of the day,
Making new friends,
Being good as you can
Exciting discoveries,
Reading books with a friend.

-Boni Fulgham

First Poem
Mommy! Daddy!
Come and look!
I'm reading! I'm reading!
I'm reading a book!

I just found it here
On the library shelf
And I can read every word
All by myself.

Mommy! Daddy!
Come look! Come look!
I'm reading! I'm reading!
My very first book!
-Linda Kulp

First Day of School

In summertime the butterflies
dance 'round our dogwood tree.
Now summer's done and school's begun
they're fluttering in me!

Will my teacher like me?
Will I make new friends?
Will I learn to write my name
before the school year ends?

Look! There's my teacher now-
she winks as I walk in.
And a boy with a friendly, freckled face
just flashed me a wide grin.

We learned to write the alphabet-
and it's only the first day!
Hey, I think those butterflies
are fluttering away!

I'll see you soon, my sunny friends
back where you belong-
dancing 'round the dogwood tree
when summer sings its song.

A School Prayer
Now happy school days once again,
Have brought us work and play.
And I am going to try to work,
And play in the best way.

So every morning when I wake,
I'll start the day quite right.
By thanking God for His great love,
And care all through the night.

I'll ask God then to be with me,
Through every hour of day.
To make me careful in my work,
And fair and true in play.

To bless each one I love at home,
And all my school friends, too.
And make each day a happy day,
For all, the whole year through.

My Good Old Backpack

My backpack has a rip in it,
But I don't really care.
It hops with me, it jumps with me,
It goes 'most everywhere.

Sometimes it's filled with school stuff,
or balls, or special junk,
Sometimes my lunch bag opens up
and then it's full of gunk.

I tie on charms and key chains
so it jingles and it chimes.
Without my good old backpack,
I'd have an awful time.
-Betsy Franco

Ready
Shoes polished
Clothes pressed
Teeth brushed
All dressed.

Juice poured
Eggs beaten
Toast buttered
Breakfast eaten.

Dog walked
Cat fed
Mom kissed
'Byes said.

Scared inside
But lookin' cool
Good-bye summer
Hello, school.

Recess Song

(Tune:  Here We Go ‘Round the Mulberry Bush)

Here we go out to play with friends,

Play with friends, play with friends,

Here we go out to play with friends,

At recess time today.

We’ll play nicely with our friends,

With out friends, with our friends,

We’ll play nicely with our friends,

At recess time today.

Whisky Frisky

Whisky Frisky,

Hippity-hop;

Up he goes

To the treetop!

Whirly twirly,

Round and round;

Down he scampers

To the ground.

Furly, curly,

What a tail!

Tall as a feather,

Broad as a sail!

Where’s his supper?

In the shell.

Snap, cracky,

Out it fell.
