Our poetry units go along with the November units on Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, Columbus, Scarecrows, and Fall.

Give Thanks
For all the blessings that are ours,
For all our food, our lovely flowers,
Give thanks!
For trees that give us food to eat,
For winter cold and summer heat,
Give thanks!

For Mother's love and Father's aid,
For all the wonders God has made,
Give thanks!
For friends and toys with which to play,
For restless nights and joyous days,
Give thanks

Oh, It’s Thanksgiving

(Tune:  You Are My Sunshine)

Oh, it’s Thanksgiving, I love Thanksgiving.

And we will all join hands and pray.

We will say, “Thank You”, and count our blessings.

Because Thanksgiving is a special day.

I Ate Too Much
I ate too much turkey,
I ate too much corn,
I ate too much pudding and pie,
I'm stuffed up with muffins,
and much too much stuffin'
I'm probably going to die.
I piled up my plate
and I ate and I ate
but I wish I had known when to stop,
for I'm so crammed with yams
sauces, gravies, and jams,
that my buttons are starting to pop.
I'm full of tomatoes,
and french-fried potatoes
my stomach is swollen and sore,
but there's still some dessert
so I guess it won't hurt
if I eat just a little bit more.

Thank You God

Thank you God for my friends

And my family.

I thank you God for lots of things,

And especially for me!

For trees and sunshine all around,

For rain to help plants grow.

And thank you God for loving me~

I think that you should know!

Pumpkin Pie Time
Thanksgiving's coming
It's time to bake pies.
Apple and pumpkin
are sure to delight!
Slice up the apples
(sneak a tiny bite)!
Mash up the pumpkin
(one that's plump and ripe).
Add a bit of sugar
Sprinkle in some spice
Roll out the piecrust
Make it thin and light.
Bake the pies in the oven
'Til they're browned just right.
Set them on the table
Oh, they smell so nice!
Now, come on, come all!
And bring your appetite!
-Dorothy Jean Sklar

Thank You Song

(Tune To:  Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

“Thank You” are the words we say,

Not just on Thanksgiving Day.

“Thank You” are two special words.

Say them loud so they are heard!

“Thank You” are the words we say,

We give thanks in many ways!

Thanksgiving

T is for the trust the pilgrims had so many years ago.
H is for the harvest the settlers learned to grow.
A is for America, the land in which we live.
N is for nature and beauty which she gives.
K is for kindness, gentle words, thoughtful deeds.
S is for smiles, the sunshine everyone needs.
G is for gratitude...our blessings great and small.
I is for ideas, letting wisdom grow tall.
V is for voices, singing laughing, always caring.
I is for Indians, who taught them about sharing.
N is for neighbors, across the street, over the sea.
G is for giving of myself to make a better me.

Scarecrow, Scarecrow

(Tune:  Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear)

Scarecrow, scarecrow, touch the ground.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, stretch up high.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, blink your eyes.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, kick your feet.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, flap like a sheet.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, bend so low.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, touch your toe.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, nod your head.

Scarecrow, scarecrow, go to bed!

I'm a Little Scarecrow

(Tune:  I'm a Little Teapot)

I'm a little scarecrow,

Raggedy and worn.

I wear a hat,

And a shirt that's torn.

When the crows come,

I wave and shout,

"Away from my garden ----

Get on out!"

The Scarecrow

The old scarecrow is such a funny man.

He flops in the wind as hard as he can.

He flops to the right.

He flops to the left.

He flops back and forth

Till he's most out of breath.

His arms swing out; his legs swing, too.

He nods his head in a How-do-you-do?

See him flippity flop when the wind blows hard,

The funny scarecrow in our backyard.

How Scary Can You Be?

Scarecrow, scarecrow,

How scary can you be?

You scared a crow,

But you didn’t scare me!

Scarecrow, scarecrow,

How scary can you be?

You scared a raccoon,

 But you didn’t scare me!

A Thanksgiving Alphabet

Oh, give thanks unto the Lord

 For America with it's plenty and freedom;
For the Bible, Baseball, and other Books;
For Christ, the Church and Children who spend money as if it does not grow on trees;
For Dads who provide, protect, and prepare us for life;
For Easter, Eyes that see, and Ears that hear;
For Faith, Food, Friends, Family, and even Football;
For the Good times of the past and the present;
For the Health of body and the Happiness of spirit;
For Immorality, and Ice cream;
For Jesus, Joggers, and Jingle bells;
For the Kindness of nurses, doctors, mailmen, clerks, teachers and policemen;
For Life, with a good night's sleep, a comfortable pair of shoes, a glass of cold water, and a daily newspaper;
For Mothers and their tender, loving care;
For Neighbors who return everything they borrow;
For the Outdoors with it's beauty and splendor;
For Peace, Parents, Picnics, and Popcorn;
For Quiet times to rest and relax and reflect;
For Rainbows, the Right word at the Right time;
For Senior citizens with their wit and wisdom and for Single persons with their labor and love;
For Teeth to chew, and Toes to dance;
For the Unexpected joys, like a letter from a child away at college, or a visit from an old friend;
For Vegetable gardens, Victorious teams, Vacations;
For tone-deaf Worshippers who sing just the same;
For all the eXtra things we forget;
For Youth who don't know it all and want to learn;
For Zoos and Zippers and Zest for living.
For the Lord's blessings endure forever.

Gobble, Gobble

The turkey is a funny bird.

His head goes bobble bobble.

And all he knows is just one word

 "Gobble! Gobble! Gobble"

Indian Children

Where we walk to school each day

Indian children use to play.

And the trees were very tall,

And there were no streets at all.

Only wigwams on the ground,

And at night bears prowling round.

What a different place today,

Where we live and work and play.

I’m Thankful

I'm thankful for the turkey.

I'm thankful for the pie.

I'm thankful for the corn and bread

And squash I'm going to try.

I'm thankful for the toys I have,

The sun I feel and see,

And always, for my family

Who gather here with me.

Thanksgiving
Thank you
for all my hands can hold-
apples red
and melons gold,
yellow corn
both ripe and sweet,
peas and beans
so good to eat!

Thank you-
for all my eyes can see-
lovely sunlight,
field and tree,
white cloud-boats
in sea-deep sky,
soaring bird
and butterfly.

Thank you-
for all my ears can hear-
birds' song echoing
far and near,
songs of little
stream, big sea
cricket, bullfrog,
duck and bee!
