March Poetry Page

Our Poetry units go along with our March units on Spring, Kites,

St. Patrick’s Day, Frogs, Animals, and Dr. Seuss.

Never Mind, March

Never mind, March, we know

When you blow

You’re not really mad

Or angry, or bad;

You’re only blowing the winter away

To get the world ready for April and May.

It's Time for Spring
My sweater's tight and itchy
My snow pants are too small
Last week I lost a mitten
I can't find my scarf at all.

My woolen socks have lost their toes
My boots have lost their tread
And I have lost the love I had
For words like "skis" and "sled".

But...my fishing rod still fits
And...my baseball bat still hits
I have a kite that wants to fly
So...Winter, call it quits!
-Bobbi Katz

Wearing Of The Green
It ought to come in April
Or better yet, in May
When everything is green as green-
I mean St. Patrick's Day.

With still a week of winter
This wearing of the green
Seems rather out of season-
It's rushing things, I mean.

But maybe March is better
When all is done and said:
St. Patrick brings a promise,
A four-leaf-clover promise,
A green-all-over promise
Of springtime just ahead.

Lion and Lamb

A lion is big and very strong.

It has a tail that’s very long!

A lion can roar in a great big way.

I feel like a lion today!

A lamb is small and soft and sweet.

It has a tail that’ short and neat.

A lamb can bleat in a quiet way.

I feel like a lamb today.

The Cat In The Hat Comes Back-

 (Try a story rewrite! )

I use the following story frame for mine:

If the cat came into the (dining room)

This is what I would do.......

I would make him a lasagna dinner

And call the man at the zoo

Sunflakes
If sunlight fell like snowflakes
gleaming yellow and so bright
we could build a sunman
we could have a sunball fight.
We could watch the sunflakes
drifting in the sky
We could go sleighing
in the middle of July
through sundrifts and sunbanks
we could ride a sunmobile
and we could touch sunflakes-
I wonder how they'd feel.

It’s Spring

Bees soon will buzz.

Rabbits soon will hop.

Birds soon will sing.

Frogs soon kerplop.

Chicks soon will peek.

Kids soon will play.

A fine spring day!

By Robert McCracken

The Monkeys At The Zoo

Tune:  Farmer In The Dell

The monkeys at the zoo,

The monkeys at the zoo,

Hi-ho, they laugh and play,

The monkeys at the zoo.

The monkeys run and hide,

The monkeys run and hide,

They like to play, then run away,

The monkeys at the zoo.

Er-er-er-er-Rooster

Every day the rooster crows,

Er-er-er-er-er,

As he stretches on his toes,

Er-er-er-er-er,

He shakes his head,

And flaps his wings,

Er-er-er-er-er,

Wake up, wake up you sleepy head,

Er-er-er-er-er!

The Rooster

Tune:  Pop Goes The Weasel

The rooster crows at the break of day

To say the day is new

We all know just what he’ll say,

“Cock-a-doodle-doo!”

There Was A Little Turtle

There was a little turtle,

Who lived in a box,

He swam in a puddle,

He climbed on the rocks,

He snapped at a mosquito,

He snapped at a flea,

He snapped at a minnow,

And he snapped at me,

He caught the mosquito,

He caught the flea,

He caught the minnow,

But, he didn’t catch me.

Down At The Barnyard

Tune: Down By The Station

Down at the barnyard,

Early in the morning

See the little chicks,

Moving to and fro,

See them come to greet us,

Flap, flap, flap, flap,

Off they go!

FIVE LITTLE FROGS
Five little frogs sitting by a lake.
The first was scared away by a snake.
The next one decided to take a swim.
The third one followed him right in.
The fourth little frog took a great big leap
So the last little frog just went to sleep
.

Twenty Froggies

Twenty froggies went to school,

Down beside a rushy pool.

Twenty vests all white and clean,

Twenty coats all bright and green.

“We must be on time”, said they,

First we study, then we play.

That is how we go to school,

Down beside the rushy pool.

Higgy Piggy

You put your right hoof in,

You put your right out,

You put your right hoof in and,

You shake it all about,

You do the Higgy-Piggy and,

You turn yourself around,

That’s what it’s all about!

OINK!

Other verses:

Left hoof, right hamhock,

snout, curly tail, etc.

Eight Pigs

Two mother pigs lived in a pen,

(thumbs)

Each had four babies and that made ten.

 (fingers of both hands)

These 4 babies were black and white.

 (fingers of one hand)

These 4 babies were black as night.

(fingers of other hand)

All 8 babies loved to play.

(wiggle fingers)

And they rolled and rolled in the mud all day.

(roll hands)
