The First Grade Poetry Page

Keep a Poem in Your Pocket
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.

The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you're in bed.

So-
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you'll never feel lonely
At night when you're in bed.
-Beatrice Schenk de Rogniers

Sit back and relax while you browse through The Poetry Page.  Poetry is an important part of our daily routine.  We listen and enjoy the sounds of our language. We use a variety of songs and poems during our shared reading time. Our favorite poems are added to our Poetry Notebooks. The children use their poetry notebooks for independent reading during DEAR time also.  At the end of the year, they have a nice collection of the poems we learned in first grade. Click on a month to find some of our favorite poems.

Creative Poetry

Poetry is a wonderful way to teach reading and writing especially to the emergent, early/beginning readers. Through reading and writing poetry your children will be able to express their feelings, thoughts and imagination about silly to serious topics.

First Grade Poetry

We read and write lots of different

poetry in first grade.  Listed below

are the different types of poetry

that we do each month.

We are “Star Poets”.

For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.  Acts 17:28
