April Poetry Page

Our Poetry units go along with the units that we have

on Weather, Ecology, Easter and the Circus.

April

April can be cold and blowy,

April can be warm.

We can have an April heat wave

Or an April storm.

Rainy Day
I used to hate a rainy day
There were no outside games to play,
And even though our house was roomy,
The gray rain made the inside gloomy.
Now, I don't mind the rain at all,
For when no friends come to call,
I've all the company I need
I pick me out a book- and read!
-Gina Bell-Zano

April Fool's Day

The first of April, some do say
Is set aside for April Fool's Day
But why the people call it so
Nor I nor they themselves do know.

JELLY BEAN PRAYER

RED is for the blood He gave
GREEN is for the grass He made
YELLOW is for the sun so bright
ORANGE is for the edge of night
BLACK is for the sins we made
WHITE is for the grace He gave
PURPLE is for His hours of sorrow
PINK is for our new tomorrow
A bagful of jelly beans
Colorful and sweet
Is a prayer, a promise
and an Easter treat!

PROMISE

Every year
After winter goes
Spring comes
To remind us that
Eternal life is
Really possible.

-Mrs. Kenneth Carpenter

Mud Puddle Talk
A splish a splash,
A splish a splash,
A puddle a puddle
A jump and a smash.

A slip and a slop
A drip and a drop
A pool and a puddle
A run and a hop.

A wet soaking sock-
It's mud puddle talk.
A thump a glump
A rainy day walk.
-Jennifer Jesseph

I’m A Little Turtle

Tune:  I’m A Little Teapot

I’m a little turtle with a shell

I have four legs, a head, and tail,

When I get so scared I want to hide,

I pull my legs and head inside

Little Duck

Tune:  Yankee Doodle

Once there was a little duck

Who lived down by the lake,

His mother had to quack for him

‘Cause he was always late,

Quack (7 times)

Hurry don’t be late!

Quack (7 times)

Don’t make your mother wait.

Recycle

Tune:  Ten In A Bed

A can in the bin

And another went in.

Recycle!  Recycle!

We all recycled and added a can.

There were two in the bin

And another went in.

Recycle!  Recycle!

(Continue till you get to five)

Working On Trash

Tune:  I’ve Been Working On the Railroad

We’ve been working on recycling.

All the trash we can.

We’ve been working on recycling

It’s a simple plan.

Separate your glass and paper,

Separate your plastic and tin.

Take the trash you’ve recycled

To your recycling bin!

Earth Pledge

No job is too big,

No action too small

For the care of this earth,

Is the task of us all.

(We learn this pledge and sign

a banner saying we will take

care of God’s earth.  They each

receive an earth badge.)

1 AND 1 ARE 2
 1 and 1 are 2
That's for me and you.
2 and 2 are 4.
That's a couple more.
3 and 3 are 6.
We can build with sticks.
4 and 4 are 8.
Your date is at the gate.
5 and 5 are 10.
Feed the big red hen.
6 and 6 are 12.
We can ring the bell.
7 and 7 are 14.
We love Michael Jordan.
8 and 8 are 16.
The stew Jessie is mixing.
9 and 9 are 18.
A picture we are painting.
10 and 10 are 20.
We like good and plenty!

Pick up all the trash you see.

U V W X Y Z

Keep it clean for you and me!

OH NO!

We make a class book entitled OH NO!  I give each child the opportunity to draw a picture and write or dictate a sentence about something they do not like seeing happen to our earth.  Each page ends with OH NO!  Example…I see people littering. OH NO!  I do the last page of the book.  It says, but we are learning to take care of the earth.

 OH YES!

Under The Big Top

Under the Big Top, what will I see?
Look there's an elephant smiling at me.
Behind the elephant, what will I see?
Look there's a bear dancing for me.
Behind the bear, what will I see?
Look a wild lion is roaring at me.
Behind the lion, what will I see?
A little seal doing tricks for me.

Carl The Clown

My name, boys and girls, is Carl the Clown
I wear my hats all over town.
Each one has its own color name,
Which you can learn if you play my game.
On, here's a hat, and it is red
It fits so nicely on my head.
Now when I wear my hat of yellow,
I'm told I'm quite a dandy fellow.
I hope you like my hat of blue.
I'll put it on now, just for you.
My purple hat is just for good.
I'd wear it always if I could.
I wear a white hat on a sunny day.
It looks quite nice, my friends all say.
I put on my green hat to visit the park,
But I take it off when it gets dark.
And when it's dark, I put on brown
This hat is for a sleepy clown
.
