October is a beautiful time of the year as
the leaves are starting to fall off the trees. We have been receiving lots of postcards from many states with
our “Postcard Exchange” and the children thoroughly enjoy hearing
about what is going on in each classroom.
We put the postcards around our United States map and discuss each
state that we receive a postcard from.
Our Bible verses for the month of October
have been about friendship. We put
the 12 disciples to a song and enjoy singing that each day. Music is such a part of our classroom day
and we are so blessed to sing praises to the Lord!
We finished up with phonics chart #6 and
we are now on phonics chart #7. The
children like to memorize the chart and get extra happy faces for doing so.
We have finished spelling unit #10 and it is so much fun to see the children
use good spelling in their creative writing.
Zero the Hero comes into the classroom on the days that end with
zero. Zero is our penguin that lives
where the temperature is below zero and comes into our classroom to get
warmed up. He sits on different
children’s desk throughout the day and we get so excited to see whose desk he
ends up on at the end of the day. We
love the zero shaped treats!!!!
We had watermelon week and did fun
watermelon art projects. We had a
watermelon seed-spitting contest and graphed the results. Caleb spit his watermelon seed 12
feet and was the champion watermelon seed spitter. We learned this cute
watermelon song.

Watermelon
(Sing to the tune-Are You Sleeping?)
Watermelon, watermelon
On the vine, on the vine,
Sweet and red and juicy.
Sweet and red and juicy.
Please be mine.
Please be mine.

We
celebrated Native American Day with Christopher Columbus activities. We made art projects and wrote stories
about his voyage of discovering America.
We
had Parent-Teacher conferences on Oct. 29 with an early dismissal at 11:45
for afternoon and evening conferences.
I always enjoy sharing about your child’s progress and hearing about
your child. They are truly a gift
from the Lord and a treasure beyond words.
Pumpkin Math was so much fun with the parent
helpers. Thanks Amanda , Charity and Amy for helping us. We did lots of math activities with our
pumpkins. We counted 1,919 seeds in
the 3 pumpkins. It was fun to eat the
baked pumpkin seeds after picking them all out. We read lots of pumpkin books, sang songs and recited poems.
We
made pumpkin muffins and had our end of the month “Ice Cream Sundae Party” We
had a fun time measuring and applying our math skills to our projects.
Our
Show and Tell for this past month has been a specific lesson each week. We had to draw a picture of our self, our
family, our friends, and our house.
We drew a self-portrait for our cover and put the pages in our
booklet.
We traveled to the Marion Road fire station
as part of our fire safety unit in October.
The children saw a fire safety video and took a tour of the fire
station. We truly appreciate our firefighters and how they protect and serve
us.
We
made a beautiful Tree and Leaf Book as part of our science
class. We had a fun time on our fall walk and came back to the class and
wrote stories about our adventures.
We even had a leaf fight. The
children did a nice job on their Leaf Projects and we put them up out in the
hall for all to see.
We had our Oreo Cookie Stacking
Project. Each boy and girl tried
their hand at stacking the Oreo cookies.
Elizabeth stacked 22 cookies before they tumbled over. We graphed our
results and then ate fresh Oreos with a big glass of milk. It was yummy!!!!!!
October has been lots of fun and we are
looking forward to November and presenting our Thanksgiving program with Mrs.
Lundquist’s class to you on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 2:00-3:00 in the SMC. We
will have refreshments after the program.
We will also be going to Pettigrew Museum on Wed., Nov. 28 from
12:30-2:30.
In Christ,
Mrs. Hayes
