May News

May has just zipped by so quickly and I can’t believe that the school year is over.  This has been the most wonderful class a teacher could ever have had.  I thank the Lord daily for this marvelous group of first graders.  It is hard to pass them on to 2nd grade and I will miss them beyond words could say.  I will be lonely for them the day after school is out.

We had National Day of Prayer on May 1st and what a privilege that we can gather together as a school and pray.  Each class had a representative that lead in prayer and it is honor to see our students pray together.

We had our Walk-A-Thon on May 6th and raised money for the school.  The weather was beautiful for the students walking the Yankton Trails.  We had a sack lunch and chapel songfest at the end of the Walk-A-Thon and everyone enjoyed it immensely.

We celebrated Eric Carle Week by reading his creative and colorful books. He is just one of our favorite authors and the children could hardly wait each day to see what book we would read.

We finished up all our spelling word lists and did the color and number words also.  Spelling is so important and we have learned to apply our phonics rules to good spelling.

We had Field Day on May 12th and spent the morning doing various athletic skills and earning ribbons for our endeavors.  It was great fun to do the events and practice good sportsmanship with our classmates.

We had Laura Ingall’s Wilder Book Week and read her Beginning Little House series and enjoyed each one.  We did book reports and answered complete sentences for the comprehension questions over the various books. We are really ready for 2nd grade!!!! I am encouraged by the fact she didn’t write her books until after she was 60 years old.  There’s hope for me now!!!!!!!!!

We presented our Mother’s Day Program on May 9th and it was such a blessing to let our Mothers know how much each one is loved and appreciated.

Appreciation

Appreciation on this day

Is due to every mother.

Of all the family you know

She does more than any other.

*  We finished our phonics lessons with Phonics Chart #10 and it had a lot of hard phonics rules in it to learn.  The children did very well on each phonics chart and I am proud of them for working so hard on all of them.  They truly help us with spelling and decoding new words.

We had our “Camp Read A-Lot day in the SMC on May 14th and it was a fun camping day.  We had a sack lunch from Burger King, sang camp songs around the fire, make craft projects, had a scavenger hunt, read letters from home, wrote postcards to our families and had just a super time of camping.

Madison and Jacob had perfect attendance for the entire 1st grade year.  Way to go Madison and Jacob on your perfect attendance for the school year.

It was such a wonderful blessing to have Mrs. Schlangen help in the classroom.  I certainly appreciate all her help and she just loves the children.  The children will miss her next year.  Thank you Charity Helleson for being such great room mom and all your special help.

We finished up the month of May with 5th grade graduation and the awards ceremony.  It is hard to see our 5th graders go and we wish them the very best in the Lord.  May they always keep the Lord first in their hearts and lives.

*Please have your child join the summer reading program at the public library or at Barnes & Noble. Have a wonderful summer and remember to read-read-read-read!!!!!

Just a closing note to say,

I have enjoyed your child in school each day.

A child is a gift in his own special way,

With a frown, a smile, or an attractive display.

It has been a pleasure the year through,

To work together while your youngster grew.

Sincerely In Christ,

Mrs. Hayes
