January News

It’s hard to believe that the school year is half over and we are now in the year 2008.  We certainly don’t let any grass grow under our feet and keep really busy learning and having fun projects to do all the time.

The first graders earned 200 points during the month of January and built a snowman with their points.  For every 20 points earned they added a part to the snowman.  We celebrated reaching our goal with a swim party at Family Wellness Center.  They thought this was the best party ever.  I told them that they were the “best class ever”!!

We are reading in our groups, with our reading partners and individually and finished up with another one of our first grade basal readers.  During reading time we set a goal of reading 43 books from leveled readers and most of the children attained his/her goal.  For Burger King Reading the children had to do 3 book reports and they thought that was great fun.  It is fun to write a book report and share what you have gleaned from that book. They had to find 3 fiction and 3 non-fiction books in class and report on the difference.  We also highlighted Jan Brett as our author of the month.

In math class we worked on numbers past 100, temperature, adding and subtracting to 10, story problems and clocks.  We checked our daily temperature on the computer and it was fun to see the wind direction and wind chill. January has been a pleasant month and we are always glad that we can go outside. We know more cold winter weather is coming.

In social studies we studied about Alaska and made Alaska booklets.  Alaska is so beautiful to see.  We have been to Alaska to visit our son and were so blessed by God’s beauty.  It is truly one of the most beautiful places to visit.

We had penguin week and made penguin art projects, shared penguin books, and wrote all about penguins.  We love penguins and they are so adorable.  Zero the Hero is a penguin and he was so glad to have so many penguin friends visit him.

In science we studied the four seasons, the months of the year, and the stars and planets.  Starlab came to us in the gym and we gazed at all the constellations.  The children knew most of the constellations.  Way to go first graders with your star knowledge.

We enjoyed learning about Martin Luther King Jr.  We admire his courage and his stand for equality and justice.  We wrote stories about, “I Have A Dream”.

Our January Star Student of the Month was Madison Rokusek and I am proud of each of the first graders and how hard they work and are a blessing to their classmates.

We celebrated my ˝ birthday during the month of January and I certainly appreciate the wonderful expressions of love.  Praise the Lord for each and every day that He gives to us.

The children wrote and illustrated language journals at home and they brought them back to class and shared with everyone.  We so enjoyed listening to their 5-day journal.

Our Bible verses were about the Word of God and we memorized the New Testament books by song.  It is so much fun to put the Word of God to music and glorify the Lord.

In Christ,

Mrs. Hayes
