Congratulations to Cadence, Elizabeth, Jaedon, Madaline and Payton for placing in the Young Authors Writing Contest. Elizabeth went on to the state finals and won first place.  This involved all children through out the Sioux Falls area.  I am very proud of each one and for their hard work.

We will be finishing up with phonics chart #10 in phonics class and had our last phonics test over it on April 30. Phonics chart #11 is our last phonics chart in 1st grade and the children will not be tested over it.

Our Bible verses were all about giving and what blessed verses we put in our heart so that we can give to others.  We really liked the verse, “In everything give thanks I Thess. 5:18”. We really have to practice that verse through all situations.  We also worked on  The Ten Commandments and we are so glad they are displayed in our school.  How wonderful to go to a Christian School and be able to pray for our country.

The children shared creative writing stories for Show & Tell during the month of April and I love to hear their stories.

The children had an “egg-ceptional scientific month with our egg drop and airplane throw over the upstairs balcony.  Each of the first graders also presented, with their parents, a science experiment to the class.  Those experiments were terrific and I learned so much.  They were super!!!  We had lots of plastic items brought in for our Ecology unit.  Every student checks out #’s on plastic now to see if it can be properly recycled.

We are adding and subtracting to 12 and it takes lots of thinking power to come up with the answers quickly and accurately.  We are adding 2-3 digit numbers, carrying, clocks to the minute, fractions, counting by odd and even numbers, story problems, greater & less using the arrow sign and how to think outside the box to solve math problems.

Please put Fri., May 9 on your calendar for our Mother’s Day program.  It will be in the church sanctuary from 2:00-3:00.

Congratulations to Jacob and Malay who were the April Star Students of the Month.

We are starting our last month of school and as the saying goes, “Time flies when you are having fun”, and we have certainly been having fun learning and do lots of projects.  I will miss these children beyond measure when they depart the end of May.  Well, we will enjoy each day together that the Lord has given us.

In Christ,

Mrs. Hayes
