First Grade Field Trips

Each month we take a field trip that correlates to our units of study in first grade.

A note is sent home prior to the field trip to let you know the time and date and if

you would like to drive and go with us.

September

Country Corner Apple Orchard

We study about apples during the month of September.  To finish our apple study the first grade students take a field trip to the apple orchard.  The cost includes admission, a wagon ride to pick apples, juice, story and a keepsake.

October

Downtown Fire Station

Stop, drop and roll is what we learn during Fire Prevention Week in October along with many fire safety tips.  We travel to the fire station for an educational tour and fire safety video.

November

Pettigrew Museum

Pettigrew Museum is rich in South Dakota history.  Mr. Pettigrew was a senator from Sioux Falls and collected artifacts from all over the world. His historical home was turned into a museum and is filled with interesting items for the students to see.

December

Children’s Inn

Children’s Inn is a safe place for mothers and children during domestic difficulties.  Our first graders bring gifts of clothing to give to the children.  We go to Children’s Inn and they share with us the vision of helping others. This is the true meaning of Christmas in sharing the love of Christ.

January

Swim Party

This is one of the most favorite field trips of the year.  The children go to the Wellness Center and spend the afternoon swimming.  Both first grade classes go together and then come back to the school for treats.

February

100th Day of School Celebration

We don’t take a field trip in Feb., but have a

big 100th day celebration.  We release 100 balloons with postcards on them and have gotten replies back as far as Chicago.  We do various 100 day activities all day long and it is the highlight of the year.

March

Downtown Public Library

Read-Read-Read!!!! We love to read in first grade and study all the authors and illustrators. It opens up the world to us.  We get to see a children’s book video, tour the library, check out books and browse around the children’s library section.

April

Keuhn Park

We go over to Keuhn Park for a fun time of playing with our first grade classmates and then back to the room for treats.

May

Camp Day

This field day is held in the Ministries Center.  We sing around the campfire, go on a scavenger hunt, read in tents, sleep in sleeping bags, read mail from home, write letters home, see a camp video make camp crafts, and have an award ceremony.  What a great way to end our first grade year.
