We use the 220 Dolch words in the first
grade for our word wall. Every month the students will have 24-26 words
that they learn and will prayerfully master. Every week we focus on just
6-7 of the words. We build sentences, make flash cards, do word wall
games, partner up and play memory etc. At the end of the month I will
individually quiz the students to make sure that they know the Dolch words for
the month. When they master the month's Dolch words they will receive a
certificate. At the beginning of the year they will receive a list with
all 220 words on it divided up by month. I will also send home a single
list of the month’s words at the beginning of each month. Below you
will find a list of all the 220 words divided up by months.
The Dolch words are the 220 most
frequently found words in books that children read. The lists are in
order of frequency. These lists are studied in first and second grade. Children
who learn these words have a good base for beginning reading. Many of
these words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow decoding
rules. These words must be learned as sight words.
Parents may
want to make flashcards, bingo games or matching games for their child's
practice.
Here are some great sites to visit for
more fun activities using the Dolch words.
