Billy Bison

Our Traveling Mascot

We would like to share Billy Bison with various classrooms across America and let them know all about South Dakota.  Billy is our stuffed toy buffalo and representative of South Dakota.  In return, we’d like to find out about you and where you live.  Below are the steps to follow in having Billy Buffalo come and visit your classroom.

1. Send an email to me requesting a visit from Billy Buffalo.

2. I'll arrange to have Billy mailed to your school when you are in session.

3. Billy will come complete with an information packet about Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a disposable camera to take photos of your city/town and a journal to keep track of all the things you do with Billy while he's visiting you at your school.

4. When Billy’s trip is over you'll need to send him on home to Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Complete mailing instructions will be provided. The cost to you will be the cost to develop the film and mail Billy, some favorite photos, and the journal back to Sioux Falls.

This will be a fun way to share our classroom and community with other classes in other communities around the country. It's an exciting virtual trip for us and a great way to learn about our country and the fabulous folks that live here.

The first step to having Billy in your classroom is to send an email. I'll return your email within a day and let you know if it works out for Billy to come for a visit.

Some information about the buffalo in South Dakota.

Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup

It’s a crisp fall morning and songbirds are chirping.  Dew glistens on the amber grasses, as a low rumble grows louder and louder.  Suddenly, hundreds of bison stampede over a hilltop.  Park staff, cowboys and cowgirls saddle up to move the park’s 1,500 bison to the buffalo corrals.  The annual Buffalo roundup is an important part of the park’s management program.  Custer is located, in the beautiful Black Hills, in the western part of South Dakota.
